About the Harold Pratt House
The Harold Pratt House, located at 58 East 68th Street in New York City, is a refined example of neo-Georgian architecture designed by the prominent architectural firm Delano & Aldrich. Built in 1919 as a private residence for Harold Irving Pratt, a Standard Oil executive and philanthropist, the house embodies the firm’s characteristic blend of classical design elements and meticulous craftsmanship. The red brick facade, accented with limestone trim and tall sash windows, reflects the balanced proportions and understated elegance typical of Delano & Aldrich’s work. A central doorway, framed by an ornate fanlight and columns, serves as a focal point, providing a stately yet welcoming presence.
Inside, the house showcases Delano & Aldrich’s attention to detail, with grand spaces designed to convey both formality and warmth. Visitors are greeted by a sweeping staircase and rooms featuring high ceilings, wood-paneled walls, intricate crown moldings, and decorative fireplaces. The materials and craftsmanship create an atmosphere of timeless sophistication. The library, a standout feature, is lined with shelves of books and offers a tranquil, traditional study environment. Other spaces range from intimate meeting rooms to larger halls, all retaining the architectural integrity of the original design.
As the headquarters of the Council on Foreign Relations since 1945, the Harold Pratt House has been thoughtfully updated to meet modern needs while preserving its historical and aesthetic significance. Its combination of elegant architecture and functional spaces makes it a fitting venue for an organization dedicated to fostering informed dialogue on international issues. The work of Delano & Aldrich is evident throughout, ensuring the building remains both a historical landmark and a practical space for contemporary use.
